Project \'62
What’s this all about? I don’t know. I’m your average 30 year old husband, father of two. I started buying baseball cards in 1985. I say buying because by the looks of those cards I sure did not know what the hell collecting meant. 1986 was the year the collecting began. I was and still am a child of Topps. This doesn’t mean I hate the other companies because I buy plenty of them too. I just like the history of the Topps Co.
I quit collecting in 1992. This was when the only credible baseball card shop in town closed. Strangely the crooked shop in town is still open and worse yet, the owner is a business professor at the community college. I managed to pull a C+ in his class. I’m sure I’ll get into more stories on him down the road. I continued to buy factory sets but not packs. So technically I didn’t walk away completely. I started buying packs again this year and it’s been fun. I plan on passing my collection on to my kids and grand kids someday. It probably won’t be worth much in book value, but telling a lifetime of baseball stories when I’m old and senile will be priceless.
I bleed Cubbie blue. And it hurts!! I’m writing this as therapy right now because they were finished off about 20 minutes ago. I can still remember crying myself to sleep in ‘84 and this year will be no different. I’ve decided to start putting together some vintage sets. I started with 1962 Topps. There was no real rhyme or reason why. The checklist is full of hall of famers and most were some what affordable. I still haven’t figured out a way to convince the wife buying the Mantle, Maris, and a few others is a good idea but I’ll try! I don’t like dropping alot of money on the new stuff because I collected in the late eighties and fool me once shame on you or something like that. I’m not thrilled with most game used cards or the auto inserts. I’d rather get cards signed in person, it just makes for a good story and a better memory. The game used cards are a dime a dozen anymore and usually are pretty damn ugly! This is the main reason I’d rather spend money on something that is tried and true. I still buy plenty of new product though. My selection is limited to Wally-World and Shop-ko because I won’t buy from the crooked shop, did I mention I caught this guy weighing packs of cards with a digital scale, yeah he’s crooked!
I created this blog mainly to chronicle my journey through the 1962 set and have a record of it to look back on. It also serves as a community of collectors to trade with and share stories, whether it’s about cards or just some off the wall shit. I think that is what I miss most about the old baseball card shop.
