There are many ways to start this. We could have talked about this site is the only alternative for weak fantasy baseball everywhere. We could have talked about how fantasy baseball is the best fake sport of all time. We could have talked about how fantasy advice is more than looking at last season’s stats and doling out rankings.

Or we can tell what we really want to say while saying what we could have said.

But let’s look at the most important reason. What you have here is five of the best fantasy baseball minds around.

We are not some number-crunching nerds who look at stats without providing the bigger picture of fantasy baseball (well, Newspaperman and FreeSanJose are close, but that is another story). We are not some middle-age hacks that are trying to reach the 18 to 25 audience with weak one-liners or obscure pop culture references.

TheBaseballStars are highly-opinionated, argumentative and trained writers (with the exception of PoiDog) that have been brought together for one purpose: To tell the truth.

Fantasy baseball is not just about numbers, its about that gut feeling. It is that feeling that pushes to look at picking Hanley Ramirez over Alex Rodriguez (affectionately called Purple Lips by The Jon.) Or Roy Halladay over Josh Beckett.

Any hack can look at homers and rate a guy high. TheBaseballStars looks at the homers, combined with RBI, OBP. runs and overall hits to tell the whole story.

To put it simply, We are TheBaseballStars. We are the Champ-ee-owns.

And we have something for everybody. From the kiss-stealing wheelin and dealin sonovagun Poi Dog to the golly-gee antics of Newspaperman, we got you covered. Don’t like that? Then read the cocky organized confusion of The Jon or the argumentative, beat-a-dead-horse FreeSanJose. And for a refresher, check out Oz, arguably the best young writer in journalism today.

Our goal? To try to have fresh, interactive content every day that will keep you entertained.

Your goal? To keep on coming back and commentating or asking the questions that you have. Ask us advice. Compliment us, bag us, but write back. The current climate of fantasy baseball sites and writing leaves much to be desired. It is time we changed it. So strap in suckers, it’s gonna be one helluva ride.

These are four things I look to bring you as the creator of the Cardboard Icons blog. My name is Ben Aguirre (Newspaperman) and I am a card-a-holic. I’ve been addicted to baseball cards for more than 20 years, and in many ways they have been my savior. The cards were there for me when my family was going through tough times. They were there for me when my friends were turning to drugs and other nonsense. And they are there for me now as a proud husband and soon-to-be father. And I hope they are there for my children in the future.

Cardboard Icons in many ways is my outlet to share my opinions on the hobby, both good and bad, as well as my experiences with the world, views on certain players as well as the game of baseball in general.

I am a Boston Red Sox fan, have been since my youth in the 1980s, but am an even bigger fan of the game. I love the history of the game of baseball, and am a sucker for a good story. Through this blog you’ll get to learn more about me, my passion for the game and this hobby. And hopefully along the way you’ll learn more about the baseball cards that you own.

All right. Some of you may be asking what in the world is this thing. Well, it\'s a blog. Ha, ha, funnyman. We knew that. But what is it?. What is it\'s reason for being? Why does the interwebs need yet another blog cluttering up the joint? Well, let me explain.

I have a lot of trading cards. All kinds of cards. Baseball, football, basketball, hockey, non-sports, game cards, playing cards, business cards, a whole lotta cards. Some of them are special cards. Rookies, inserts, relics, autographs, again, all kinds of cards. I want to organize these cards - at least the good ones - and post a list online so I can pull up a page and see what I have.

What’s this all about? I don’t know. I’m your average 30 year old husband, father of two. I started buying baseball cards in 1985. I say buying because by the looks of those cards I sure did not know what the hell collecting meant. 1986 was the year the collecting began. I was and still am a child of Topps. This doesn’t mean I hate the other companies because I buy plenty of them too. I just like the history of the Topps Co.
I quit collecting in 1992. This was when the only credible baseball card shop in town closed. Strangely the crooked shop in town is still open and worse yet, the owner is a business professor at the community college. I managed to pull a C+ in his class. I’m sure I’ll get into more stories on him down the road. I continued to buy factory sets but not packs. So technically I didn’t walk away completely. I started buying packs again this year and it’s been fun. I plan on passing my collection on to my kids and grand kids someday. It probably won’t be worth much in book value, but telling a lifetime of baseball stories when I’m old and senile will be priceless.
I bleed Cubbie blue. And it hurts!! I’m writing this as therapy right now because they were finished off about 20 minutes ago. I can still remember crying myself to sleep in ‘84 and this year will be no different. I’ve decided to start putting together some vintage sets. I started with 1962 Topps. There was no real rhyme or reason why. The checklist is full of hall of famers and most were some what affordable. I still haven’t figured out a way to convince the wife buying the Mantle, Maris, and a few others is a good idea but I’ll try! I don’t like dropping alot of money on the new stuff because I collected in the late eighties and fool me once shame on you or something like that. I’m not thrilled with most game used cards or the auto inserts. I’d rather get cards signed in person, it just makes for a good story and a better memory. The game used cards are a dime a dozen anymore and usually are pretty damn ugly! This is the main reason I’d rather spend money on something that is tried and true. I still buy plenty of new product though. My selection is limited to Wally-World and Shop-ko because I won’t buy from the crooked shop, did I mention I caught this guy weighing packs of cards with a digital scale, yeah he’s crooked!
I created this blog mainly to chronicle my journey through the 1962 set and have a record of it to look back on. It also serves as a community of collectors to trade with and share stories, whether it’s about cards or just some off the wall shit. I think that is what I miss most about the old baseball card shop.

My name is Brian, and I have decided to blog about my journey back into the hobby of collecting baseball cards. I have begun taking baby steps into a world that was a huge part of my life growing up.

As I began to research what is out in the marketplace today, I saw way too many things that weren’t at all familiar to me. So, my focus will be on collecting what I am calling ‘30-year old cardboard’. This will be a great opportunity to reminisce about what I consider to be the glory days of baseball and baseball card collecting - the 1980’s.

Had it not been for a handful of ego-driven and power hungry newspaper and yearbook editors throughout my high school experience, I fully believe that I would have some type of job as a journalist. Since I didn’t stay on that path, I will use this blog to keep my creative mind flowing and hopefully will entertain my audience(not matter how small) in the process.
Greetings and welcome to the place where I\'ll talk about Indians baseball cards. Why? Because that\'s what I collect. Starting with my first card in 1975, my collection has amassed nearly 6000 non-duplicated singles, and grows every single day. I hope to use this spot on the Web to share images, checklists, and thoughts about various Indians baseball cards!

began collecting with a pack of 1983 Topps. I was able to pull a Gwynn rookie, no Boggs, not Sandberg. I love the Cubs and have suffered through many crappy seasons.

I actually bought two packs of 1984 Donruss from the Local Market. I got a Gwynn and a Sandberg. Its the only two packs I bought. The first set I ever bought was a 1985 Topps set from Howard\'s sportscards. I ordered it through the mail from a listing in Baseball Cards Magazine. I did get a McGwire out a pack.

I had the opportunity to buy an 84 Fleer Update set for 12 bucks and passed. I did buy an 86 Topps Traded however. I encountered an 86 Fleer Basketball Case at Newberry\'s in Medford, OR and didn\'t buy any for two reasons: 1. They were Fleer and I only bought Topps cards 2. They were Basketball and I only collected Baseball.

I used to walk to the store with my dad when I was a kid and bought more 87 Topps than I would like to admit. I did sneak in a bunch of 87 Fleer and 87 Donruss when they had them. I swore I would stop buying cards when packs became .50 a pack.

I used to mow my granparent\'s lawn, collect my 5 bucks, and immediately ride my bike to buy as many packs of 89 Bowman as I could. I once walked into my local card shop, bought 1 pack of 89 Upper Deck and got a Griffey. I promptly traded that Griffey one year later for 8 packs of 1990 Upper Deck. I bought 1 pack of 90-91 Upper Deck Hockey High Number and got a Bure. I started selling at card shows in 89 and stopped in 92 I was 13 and 16. I found and bought a 1990 Leaf Series 1 box for a buck a pack.

I believed Stadium Club was the best thing ever. I hate glossy, foil stamped, UV coated cards. I spent every dime I had on them. I quit collecting in 94 and started again in 1999. I hate the 200 sets a year that companies put out. I love jersey cards, refractors, and autos. I hate 1/1\'s, non-sports related cards in sports wax, especially hair cards WTF?

I dont bust wax because in 1990 I bought a box of 90 UD high number for $60 to get the Nolan Ryan error card. I didnt get one. I could have bought one for $20. I bought 10 boxes of 2003 topps football and got 1 jersey and 1 auto. Just not worth it.

I hate people in the hobby just for the money. I love AL Bundy. I saw Kirk Gibson hit that Home Run. I am a Dodgers fan too. I\'ll never forget him coming out of that dug out. I jumped out of my chair and cheered when Phil Mickelson hit that putt to win his first Major. Tiger Woods is just better....than all of us. I hate Barry Bonds for what he did. He is a loser and a horrible human being. Conseco has redeemed himself. I want everyone to succeed. I wish someone would give Mike Tyson a real hug and tell him he was the greatest and he did good. I wish that Sosa was clean. My favorite player was Pedro Guerrero. I check Randy Johnson\'s, Frank Thomas\', and Kurt Warner\'s box score.

Kurt Warner is the greatest story of all time. Jeremy Shockey is a great player to have on your team. Babe Ruth is the greatest player of all time. Hank Aaron is the home run king. Ted Williams, Wade Boggs, Tony Gwynn, and Ty Cobb are the greatest pure hitters of all time. Pete Rose belongs in the Hall of Fame. Ricky was the most dangerous hitter of all time. I am surprised nobody cut his tires to keep him from the game.

I like graded cards. 9\'s and 10\'s are for suckers. Junk autos and jerseys have got to go. I want a copy of every card ever made. Pack searchers suck.
